Sir Douglas Haig reports : We forced crossings of the Somme- southward L of .Peronne, m the face of vigorous resistance by rearguards on the eastern bank. We captured the villages of St. Christ, Brie, and Lo Mesnil-Bruntel, and took a number of prisoners. We are now advancing astride the Amiens-St. Quentin road and have reached Athies and Monsenchauissee, and captured Doingt, eastwart of Peronne, and made important progress on the high ground between Peronne and Nurlu. We hold Bussu and are nearing Templeux la Fosse, Nurlu. and Equeancourt, .where there jvas sharp fighting J during the night time. We gained ground westward of La Bassee and beat off an attack against one of our new ipoints. , ( We are now established m portions of the old German front line eastward of Neuve Chapelle, and -hold the old British front line m Fauquissart se'etor. The English advanced the line northwestward of ' Armentieres.
