Mails for Napier, South, and Auckland, per Arahura, close at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 4; Auckland nad Coast, per Arahura, 4 p.m., Friday, July 5, meantime. | A stage submarine, though it does not live torpedoes, can be a source of danger to stage hands. This was recently proved m His Majesty's Theatre, Brisbane. A ■, crowded 'audience , had 4 followed the play j "Seven* Days Leave" to its sensational : climax. They had seen the false signal flashed <to a German submarine (as yet ■ invisible) to lure it to the surf ace within J gunshot of the British warships, The ' stage was suddenly darkened, and the ' most tense moment of the drama had ' been reached. Everyone watched for the dramatic rise of the submarine. But it did not rise. Stage U-boats, though it appears paradoxical, "rise" by descending. When the stage was darkened the order to "lower" the submarine to the surface of the theatrical sea was given. The lowering occupied less time than was anticipated, owing to the snapping of the wires which suspended the canvas and wood vessel. In the dim i light it was difficult for those on the 'stage to guess what had happened, and tlio falling structure missed Mr. Allan Wilkie's head by a few inches. One of the stage hands, Thomas Horrigan, aged 25, was struck on the forearm, and both bones were broken. The "submarine"^ was smashed on the flooring. The audience was ignorant of what had. happened, and no doubt wondered when the lights went up what had become of the submarine.
