.(Received April 27, 8.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, April 27, The inter-State Commission's .report on the prico of groceries finds that the higher prices are due, amongst other uauses, to wnsteful methods of distribution and the heightened spending power of tho community owing to the Government's large war expenditure, a contributing cause being the dominating position occupied by the associations of wholesale merchants. As instancing the abaurd waste of unremunerated effort and capital jn connection with the small grocery business, the report states that sixty-nine representative shops m the metropolitan area, with a, turnover of £403,000 ure. conducted at a net loss of £1874. Only thirty-nine made net profit of £76 each. .The Commission, racommends co-operative enterprise with a view to cheapening prices. They found evidences on, the wholesale and manufacturing side of the trade of an organisation developing into rigid fexclusiveness and threatening to harden' into a monopoly. . . "
