(Au>ii«lian aud N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received April 27, 1:35 p.m.) LONDON, April 26, 4.30 p.m. The United Press correspondent describes the tempestrtioua struggle for Kemmel hill. The French heroes on the crest rxked the slopes with machine gun fire. Another unit held Kemmel village with equal tenacity. While . from the slopes of Scherpenberg> Montroige, Mbntvidache, and Montinoir the French were pouring m machine gun' fire, the batteries were raking, the middle slopes of Kemmel and the. infantry counter-at-tacking, all m one whirlpool of battle. The British on both flanks were enfilading von Bemhardie's Alpine . divisions, turning the green, flow ef-filled valley between Kemmel and the red and black mountains into a sizzling hell. The Germans paid dearly for their gains. The hardy, specially-picked storm troops charged Kemmel hill, attacking fiercely m a. noi-th- westerly direction from .Wytsehaete, and finally wedging betAveen the British and French flanks they crossed Kemmel- Ypres road, where, they were held up for two hours. They then turned south and 'poured down the valley westward of Kemmel hill, which Avas finally sur rendered by the French, on the crest, w.ho hadi held out like lions.
The German lines to-day run westward of Kemmel apparently, ibut the ultimate winner is still a matter of doubt.
