. In his report to the Council yesterday the; Overseer stated:-^-

Tangihau bridge ; but" I have not yet made, an inspection of the same. In connection with —the scouring under the -..pier- at Roberts' bridge, I accompanied the. district Engineer on his inspection, and L would recommend . that tlie,. Government be apnroaphed. for further assistance. - The Guttinig ijih the approjich to Simmons', bi'idge is giving- ' trouble owing to a Considerable -stream of water continually oozing f i;om the sides, and bottom. I am widening the cut to allow for a couple of .drains, . and> f^ascining '.'-.'"and. m : Bta]ling. ' . sThe contractor .for ' the Roberts' crossing ;to Mutuera metalling has obtained abottt ; soo c.yds. of boulders and has knappei, about 350 yds. and' spread, about; 8 chains on tlie road. The ! brige at Deep Creek .has been satisfactorily; completed and stood the test oj; the recent floods; very -well. ■ „ Manga tu riding:' Tlie contractor is getting, his gear on to the site for the *Te Hau^ bridge and will made a. start as soon as possible. The timber for Palmer's bridge, is at Piiha 1 and the contractor , ;will make a start as ' soon as.-- it is on the site. I received two offers for the work of Te Hau deviation, this work has b^en commenced. The Waipaoa I river crossings were badly, silted up but \a,re now open to traffic. The contractor is making fair progress with his widening at Wheturau. having completed about 15 chains. The' deviation at the junction of 'Mangatu and Mangamaia roads has been held up panding negotiations- with the native^ owners. A small bridge is required on Mangamaia rpad-, near the. Council's, cottage. The Sveather has 'prevented ,the , metal ' cbn'tractors on this road from resuming yrprk -and I recommend that • unless- the.re is a likelihood of completipn, that. they b^e.paid. for .the work done and that Law rie's cutting be.widsned before beingmetalled. Karaka riding.: -,'The - contractor;, for Lavenham road has satisfactorily completed ' h^s work and' • the Public Works. Inspector has accepted same and paidt over- the- grant, j am Jiaving the drains on this road opened ;and slips removed from' Battle Hill. The Waipooa rivar,- has scoured out all the willows <that' were planted near Scott's on the main road and has' also cut the v ■bank, which is about 40ft' high, to about nine feet of the hedge, and the road is m considerable danger from further erosion.
