(Australian and N.Z. Cable/ Association.) LONDON, April 25. The Australians recaptured Villers Bretonneux,, taking 600 prisoners. LONDON, April 26. Mr. Philip Gibbs writes :— A couple of bodies of Australians encircled Villers Bretonneux. while the British fought through the village from the north.
The Germans were thug entrapped. . The number of German dead exceeds Lagnicourt.
The Australian attack on Villers Bretonneux at 10 o'clock afc night was a piece of skilful and daring generalship. The Australians were sent into the darkness without artillery and relied on their rifles and bayonets.
They re-captured the most important positions and great heaps of German dead now lie around V'llers Bretonneux.
Mr. Percival Fhillros, describing the carnage among the Germans at Viilers Bretonneux, says English and Australian officers agree that they have never seen dead so thick on any battlefield.
