IMPORTANT FRENCH ADVANCE. RAIDS BY THE BRITISH. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Renter. Telegram.) PARTS, July 18. • Semi-official : Yesterday's advance" on the left of the Meuse il* of considerable importance. It releases Hill 304, which the enemy had been closely pressing, and has also done much to dear the approaches to Verdun. A French communique says : — After a violent bombardment the Germans made several attacks on positions we captured yesterday from Avocourt Wood as far as the slopes of west of Hill 304. All were shattered with sanguinary losses Avithout regaining the least portion of the conquered ground. We repulsed a German attack, west of Cerny sugar factory. LONDON, July 18. • tSir Douglas Haig reports : We successfully raided m the neighborhood of Fresnoy. There were a number of air fights yestereve, wherein large formations were engaged. We brought down hine and drove down six machines. Four of ours are missing. i (Received July 20, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 19. Sir Douglas Haig reports : — We established advance posts eastward of Monchy •le Preux, .lost on July 10th. We repulsed raiders westward of Cherisy and eastward of Oostaverne. We successfully raided east and north of Ypres. There is reciprocal artillery activity near Lombaertzyde.
