The Royal Commission which investigated the cause of .an explosion of sulphuric; acid from a drum which Was being unloaded from, the steamer Mono-. -Wfti tjri ' Auckland , when several men were severely injured, recommended that, if possible, a- Melbourne firm which „ placed -the acid m drums with 'defective bungs should be ordered* to pay jhe costs of the inquiry. The Commission expressed a ' doubt ac to whether thiia could be enforced, but added tha.t if it was- legally possible they were prepared to make such • an order. The Hon. G. Wi Russell, Minister'of Marine, informs me that the matter was referred to the Crown Law Office, which reported- that . it is impos--fiibleifiio legally recover costs from .the Australian firm * therefore the matter cannot ;be pursued. ■■ ■ ,
