LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The quarterly meeting of the gisborne Licensing Committee was- he_d v at noon to-day. Present: Messrs- W. A. Barton, S.M. (chairman), .W_."jL. Clayton, and D. J. Parker. In his report Senior-Sergeant Murray eaid tlie. regulation dealing with "shouting" was being observed~as the result of the prosecutions. Constable Torr reported that v new stables had been built at Marumaru hotel, and when the concrete floors were put down .it' would- be quite satisfactory. He reported that matters were very, unsatisfactory at tl*e Ff&sertown hotel. The licensee himself wa» very seldom on the premises and "conduct of tlie hotel was left m the hands of itwo irresponsible persons, who wero unable to get a license to carry on., Mr Crarer had sold out to Phillips and Roberts, and he . was simply holding the license for them. " The Chairman said if tlie facts were ns stated m the report, there was ample provision for dealing with the. matter under section 171 of the Licensing A/ct. However, -"Uie subject had better stand over until the June ineeting, and l if evidence is given m- support of the report, tie Committee . would have io consider "whether* or not tbe -license should not be cancelled. An. application for the post-office at Waerenga-o-kuri to be transferred to the hotel there was granted, on the condition that a person wis m- chargo of the post-office, and that persons did not have to go to tho bar to, make inquiries. An application for a_Jran-ff*!V .'of the license for toie Coronation hotel from R. S. Caulton to L. pojicrty was granted.
A large number of . interesting addi tions to the' ethnographical collections m the Auckland Museum have been made during the past year. The latest advice, from Weiheke (states the Auckland Herald) .n ref el-eiice to tbe two vessels, the cutter Stag and the scow Rimu, whioh are ashore at Hook. Bay, is that the Stag is a complete wreck. Though badly damaged, the Rimu is well up on the beach, full oi sand. It is hoped that if the wind doe: not come m from the eastward for _ time, successful salvage operations %vill be carried out
