NICKEL GOT TO HUNS.
EXPORT NOW CONTROLLED. ■ LONDON, January 16. ' The following authoritative statement in regard to nickel has been issued: — "Canadian nickel was sold hi th/j United States through the International Nickel Company only to firms s^gnin<r a stringent guarantee against reselling Ifor export. Precautions taken thereunder for supervision by the British and Canadian Governments proved satisfactory in every cae© save okc when a firm broke its bond and despatched a consignment of nickel through the submarine Deutschland. This breach of faith wa s soon discovered. Any ordinary vessel would have been intercepted before reaching Germany. Immediate steps were taken which it is believed render further breach impossible. Export of nickel from the United States is finally controlled by British official not Mertona. Two certificates are necessary from tlie British consul-general in New York and the British war trading department before exportation. Certificates are only granted after most careful investigation of the consignees. They are. pledged not to resell., '
Prior to leaving lor Australia last week, a Christchurch manufacturer told a Sun represenltative that his) passport was issued only after depositing £200 with the Government, as a' guarantee for his return.-.
