OPPRESSION OF BELGIAN WORKMEN. BELGIUM'S INSPIRATION TO THE ALLIED NATIONS. LONDON, July 23. Speaking at a banquet m celebration of . the Belgian independence, at Albert Hall, Mr. Asquith said that he wished to bring to the knowledge of the civi^ iised world Germany's new decree, inerasing taxes against Belgian workmen, the object whereof was the requisition of the Belgian /labor for military purposes. That was the climax of the Policy which had already been unsuecessiully resorted 'to of starvation and deportation. Belgium was going through one of those ordeals which proved the stuff whereof nations -were made. Britain was taking a note, and could not forget her. 1 inning to the Belgian Minister, Mr. Asquith concluded : "Tell your compatriots that their example has inspired and stimulated the Allied nations and armies. Tell them finally that when your deliverance comes, and come it must ere long, it will be for Britain a proud and ennobling memory that it shared m restoring them to their freedom and independence, whereto no nation m tho history of the world has shown itself mor© indisputably entitled.
