ANZACS IN A RAID.

BAYONETS, BOMBS, AND RIFLES. LONDON, July 5. A wounded Australian, now m London, described a raid on the German trenches that took place at midnight on the Wednesday preceding the big advance at the river Somme. He said* that 50 men were sent to ascertain what enemy regiments wero m front. " 'Tt was hotter than Gallipoli," he stated, "and heavier shell-fire. Red and white flares made the night as light as day. The Germans lined their parapets, and there was rifle* and "machine gun and hand to hand fighting. "We won the first trench by means of a hand grenade 'attack, and drove the foe back to the second. The struggle lasted for three hours, and 400 bombs were;t3iTOwn." The soldier also told howone of his comrades picked up a German bomb before it had exploded and flung it back, though he himself was wounded. The Australians entered the trenches and nine dug-outs which were 30 Ifeet deep, and stored -with provisions and beer. He avers that tfi& Germans have good

After a successful night raid the men were m high fettle and were eager m their preparations. The sergeants counted off the minutes of the final half-hour of waiting, and then the officers and men swung over the parapets and steadily moved forward over tlie shell -spitted open space. The German machine guns turned, on a fire like driving rain. Men began to drop, but the remainder kept steadfastly on like veterans. The heroism -of the officers was wonderful. One, who was shot m the hand, cried : "Go on, boys ! I'll be with you m a minute." He bandaged his hand and then followed on until he was shot once more and fell. Another was struck m the breast by a bullet and fell dying. He shouted, "Push on with it." The Bavarians fired on the wounded, but th© line advanced and held on until the remainder of the division and some Britishers came ,up.
