RAID AND COUNTER RAID.
ANZACS VISIT pPRITZ. SOME DECENT GERMANS : DISCOVERED. , , (From Captain C. E. Bean, Australian Press Representative of Commonwealth Forces.) BRITISH HEADQUARTERS, FRANCE, July 6, v Since my last cable reporting the raids by the Anzac troops ou the German trenches three more raids have been carried out by the Australians and New Zcalariders. The enemy's trenches appear to h^ve been very fully maimed, and as many as 50 are said to" have been killed m one raid (mostly by bombardr ment), and 29 m; another. These trenches now have been entered by our troops at 11 '.different' points during ' the last month. The* Germans within the, last few days attempted, m reprisals) to raid our trenches ttfioe. Li one raid they managed to capture four New Zealanders m an advance post. The other raid was driven off before reaching our trenches. • Since the first raid by. our troops about 60 Germans ..have been captured. On the way back from the Battle of the Somme I visited certain of the most famous British troops. They had made a glorious attempt to reach the German trenches in* the northern part of the line ,of battle. But they had had four hundred yards of No Man's Land to cross, and before they crossed it the Germans had their machine guns, on the parapet. . The fire rose m. constant crescendo until the attack simply Withered; I .do not know whether the Germans wero touched by their gallantry, but they did what was unprecedented m this theatre of war— helped the British carry j m- 'their wounded.
