THE BATTLE FRONTS.
Tlie High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, July 19, 11.20 p.m. On the British front north of the Somme heavy fighting is still m progress at Longueval village and De-le-Ville W9od, both of which we have already regained, and most of the ground lost last night. South of De-le-Ville Wood we dispersed by fire a large body of Germans this afternoon, who were massing to attack Waterloo Farm from the direction of Guillemonf. * LONDON, July 19, 11.20 p.m. French official : South of the Somme a small French operation south of Estrees captured some, trenches and 60 Germans were made prisoner. At Verdun front there 'was a bombardment of the first and second French lines m the region of Hill 304. There was intense artillery activity m the sector of Fleury .without infantry actions. LONDON. July 20, 3.10 i>.m. On both sides of the 'Somme French infantry this morning attacked German positions, realising marked advantages. Northwards of the Somme we took enemy trenches at Mamalon de Hardecourt to the river, carrying the French' line eastwards of Hardeconrt along the Combles-Clery railway. In that part of the battlefield Aye took nearly 400 prisoners. * South of the iSomme, between Harlux and southwards, all the enemy first line trenches were taken. In Champagne the French penetrated a. trench north-east of Auberin, bringing back prisoners. In , Argonne the Germans delivered a coup-de-main on our small posts at the .Aland salient. After lively grenade fightino- the enemy was repulsed. To the left of, the Meuse the bombardment of Ava-court and Chattancourt continues. There has been granade fighting on the north-east slopes of Hill.3W. V On the right bank we progressed westward .of Thiamont works. South-, wards of Fleury a strongly 'fortified enemy work was taken by us/ the prison-/ ers numbering 150. LONDON, July 20, £.35 p.m. Sir Douglas Haig reports that m Deleville Woodland Longueval we have Yea little more ground. Northwards of our Longrtieval-Bazentih position w© pushed our line; forward this morning;, capturing some prisoners and Una. 'Eastwards) of Leipzig Redoubt bombing parties advanced during the night. Easewhere the main battle area is chiefly marked by artillery activity, but tlie position has not changed since my last report. *;-.. Tlie diary d: a captured Qerman commanding officer shows that m the fighting on Ist July the 6th l^avariaji Itegiment opposing \.s/at Montauban suffered 3000 casualties out of a total strength of 3500 men. Another document shows that a battalion, of the 190 th Regiment lost. 980 out of 1100 men, two other battalions losing more th an half of their effective strength.
