RESOLUTION OF PROTEST.
A largely attended, and enthusiastic meeting waa held at Tauranga on Friday evening, when<fJhe action lOf'tlib Minister for Publio Works in connection with the proposed Tauranga'r^aftii ■ail way was freely criticised. The meeting was presided over by th£.,,s#ayor> aud several speakers addressed .-the audience in support of the proposal j and urged the neosssity for the' immediate construction, which at the ' present rate pf progress would take 50 years to connect with Waibi,
. The following resolution, proposed .by ; Colonel G. A; Ward' 1 and seconded b,y' Mr B. 0. Robins, mat with almost unanimous support, and was carried accordingly:—"That this meeting of residents of the borough and district of Tauranga and of delegates from WSarihi and' Katikatj, express the 'utmost surprise ajnd indignation at. > the curt. answer of the Minister foi* 'Public Works to the representations of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce/with reference to the railway bridge across the Tauranga harbor, and ( .ai railway construction between Tauranga and Waihi^ The continued apathy— not to say actual hostility — of the Minister for Publio Works to the most necessary and' important sections of the Easfc Coast Main Trunk line mentioned, above, 'merits the gravest condemn*-, t'on, ,and this meeting calls upon the Government to redeem the actual tactic pledges given in the past in reference to this ; Work, and to treat it henceforward on: its undoubted mei*its,^anking second to, ho, other railway in, the Do- * minipn in' capacity for developing the: latent resources thereof." - s A further', resolution proposed by irfr Donaldson, Mayor of Waihi, urging the Government, to expedite the progress of the Tauranga- Waihi section of v the\ railway and requesting a substantial «*grant on the, 'Estimates was also daMeln^.. ' to the above effect is being largely signed.
