• i* _ A meeting for the purpose of forming a Debating Society waa held here on Saturday night, when, there was a very good attendance. TJic following officers were elected : President, Mr Mcßae ; vice-president, Mr Hope; committee, Messrs Finlayson, Tunriicliff, Randall, Davis, and U. Loane; secretaa % v, Mr Pryor. It was decided that the society should meet fortnightly. Subsequently there was a debate oni "Conscription, All* Mcßae, seconded by Mr Loane, taking the affirmative, and }>iv Hope, sec- ■ onded' by Mr Tunnicli(f, taking the nega-tivp'. Xeajly all those present participated m the debate, and on a. «how of hanJ* being taken, Mr Hope's side had rather an easy majority. Mr Randall very capably carried out the duties of chairman. The next meeting has beni fixed for Saturday, July 3rd, when there will be a debate on, "'Should our foodstuffs be produced by and under 'the control of the State?" The sides Avail be, taken by Mousrs Finlayson and Tunnicliff. The members of the newly-formed Brass Band are now m possession of their instruments, which have arrived m good condition, and practices a.ne bpij}/? held twice weekly.
