DESPAIRING EFFORTS.
PLIGHT OF THE AUSTRIANS
EVACUATION OF TARNOIFF
AMSTERDAM, Feb. * 5. An ' Austrian official message says : We have evacuated Tarnbff owing •to the Russian bombardment. A decisive battle is proceeding in the Dinkla region, where we are feeling strong Russian pressure in the direction of Bukeba and neighboring passes.
LONDON, Feb. 5. Petrograd says the last despairing efforts of the unhappy Austrians to obey their Prussian masters and push back the Russians in the Carpathians have been less successful than their earlier attempts. The' Austrians are not numerous enough, and are not provided with sufficient artillery for the difficult task of advancing through the mountains in the depths of winter against a itte prepared and anxious to meet them. Fightinj? is hotly progressing on an eighty-mile front from the Dukla Pass to the Syshkov Pass. No anxiety is* now felt in Warsaw.
