WOOL FOR AMERICA.

STOPPED BY PROCLAMATION

GOOD AND SUFFICIENT REASON FOR THE STEP.

MELBOURNE, Feb. 5. The Customs Department has withdrawn permission to export merino wool to Amerioa. (Received February 6, 9.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 6. The stoppage of the export of merino wools to America lias caused some consternation. The Americans' free buying has been one boom factor of the recent sales. Prior to his departure for Melbourne, yesterday, a deputation of wool buyers obtained Mr Tudor's promise that the matter would be further considered at a Cabinet meeting on Monday. Tlie issue of the proclamation was unavoidable, but if it is possible to amend it, it will doubtless be done. It transpires that the order was issued as the result of a despatch' from the Secretary of State ' for the . Colonies. Mr Fisher stated there was good and sufficient reason for the step, but all it was advisable to say at present was that the action was taken in the public interest.

As the export of crossbred wool to the United States had previously been prohibited, the new order means that no wool will be allowed to be shipped there. The sailing of the steamer Lord Erne, with 10,754 bales, which had cleared for Boston, has been stopped.
