EAST COAST RAILWAY.

If it .\bould happen that this district commences to obtain justice m the matter of the East Coast Railway, it will yet have to deplore the loss of three full years. ' In the history of a country and under certain conditions, three years may be a., trifle. In the matter of railway communication for this and the Poverty Bay 1 district, three years is a serious lapse of lost time. It is, therefore, cheering to see Wairoa taking up the struggle' for justice. Wairoa wants to iinow why the on the line must needs be delayed till a- certain embankment is made. Wairoa desires to be informed why the line cannot be gone on with, arid would like to see the works started at Wairoa, to W pushed forward northwards towards Gisboriie and Southwards towards Napier. Well, Wairoa does well to take this 'stand. There is no reason, no just or fair reason, why work on the line. should be stopped till an embankment that cannot be xnade till the line gets to. Petane can be completed. For example, the line could be pushed on to Petane-, to procure material for the embankment. And the line could be proceeded with from Wairoa. There is nothing recondite about this. And Wairoa, when it wants to, know why the line is stopped, doubtless - knows very well why it is stopped — it is fully aware, we doubt not, that it Is a. question of penalising' a whole district. Its recent action is therefore a. protest against injustice. As such we must welcome it.— Napier Telegraph. /
