The varied and grotesque costumes worn by tho.«e competing, m. tbe fancy dress events caused mueVi inteivst .and annisemeiit among tlie sp-setatbi's, and the originality displayed, by some competitors contributed not n little to the success of the even-] ing. Some of the: most interesting of the fancy dress^N wei'e those ol" a "Maori Bell," Miss Po'taw?; "Britannia," Miss. E: ..Wilson; "Prince Charming, " Mr Ben Taylor ; and,, "Sunflower." Miss Mil ry Taylor. One of the fair, sex choso to ropreseiht the modern athletic girl, arid looked exceedingly charming m a yacting costume and cap. Liquid refreshments were , represented by "Johnnie. Walker'; (Mr Cuuly Wilkinsj, while Master H. Dawson and Miss Oaies as boy and girl scoiits respectively, lent a military atmosphere to tlie occasion. Miss Pota'e appeareel m a ; native costume, and had evidently been to some trouble to prepare ■ whatwas probably the most original costume m the hall. After 9.30 p.m., skating became genei'alj and at the close of the evening's enjoyment the, prizes for the ,vsrious events -were distributed by tli'e management." The voting of those pre : v sent resulted as follows :— Best lady's fancy dress,, Miss Pptae (Maori Belle) ; bost gent's, Mr Geo. Oates (Jester) ; best 1 lady skater, Mjss M.'Tnylor (Sunflower) ;'" best gent; Mj»'. W. Ghaney (Clown) ; best pair, . Miss Redstone (yachtswoman) and Mr Wilson (Ohin'aihanj"; best girl skater, Miss K. Pittar (Colleen Binrn)'; best boy, Master Jack IJawson (Red Indian). .The prizes, which were valued at aboiit £10, consisted, of various luseful articles, including silver iliouniett 'perfume bottles, manicure sets, etc, for the ladies, arid military hair brushes ahd cigarette cn*os for the men.
