DEATH OF MR W. JONES.

Death has removed another of Poverty Bay's early settlers in the person o"f Mr William Jones, of Matawhero who died suddenly at his residence shortly after 6 o'clock this morning. Mr Jones, who was 61 years of age, has resided at Matawhero ■' for , many year.s,, and . was one of the beH-known road .contractors in the district. He .has contracted for the Cooks County Council for! about 30 years, and was one who. could always be depended on to do his work well. A. powerfully-built man, he was oiie of the hardest 6t workers. Early, this week he injured his hack when lifting some sacks of oats, ,and not feeling qmte right, on Tuesday -and Wednesday, he did not go to work. -

The deceased .-gentleman appeared to be in his usual, health yesterday. He was working on the road; as tisual^ and when last seen alive about 11.15- plm. he was sitting iip in bed, reading' and smoking. About 6 o'clock this morning a member of the family heard a noise in deceased's iroom, and on going in, found Mr Jones across the bed. He gave a couple of gasps, and died in a, few minutes, heart failure being the cause of death

Deceased, who leaves a. grown-up family, to whom much sympathy will be extoiJded, was much respected by his , many acquaintances. The late 'Mr Jones was a iieen sport, and as a mark of respect, the MataWhero Football Club did not play this afternoon, The funeral will take place to-morrow at 2 p.m. An inquest was held this afternoon.
