A UNIQUE OPERATION.
«rv x• . *f. EW YORK, March 28. What is believed to be the first'operation of its kind m the history of America has taken place at Baltimore, when the cornea of a pig's eye was taken off and grafted on to the sightless eye of a three-months-old baby. There liave been previous operations m which rabbits' eyes were used, but these were unsuccessful, and experiments with pigs' eyea led the doctors to believe that these \yould be more adaptable. There are said to be two cases on record where the grafting of human cornea gave siprht to blind eyes. In yesterday's operation the boy was chloroformed, the eyeball taken out, and the cornea cut. Then a very fine needle and silk were used to sew the new piece to the child's eye, which will have to remain bandaged for a week before the doctors can tell the result.
