THE SOOTHING PIPE.
BIG RISE IN PRIOE OF TOBACCO
(Special to Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Local tobacconists have been advised of an extraordinary big increase m the prices to be charged for the more popular brands of. tobacco starting with the next shipments. The increased price runs up- to as much as Is per lb, which is an astonishingly large advance. Hitherto prices have advanced by a penny or two pence, but never before m such a wholesale way. Details of the principal increases are : —
These prices of course are for bulk tobacco m bond, and they apply only to ' large purchasers. If purchased m small lots there is an extra 3d per lb put on. The price of tobacco m tins will remain unaffected, but the quantity m the tin is to be -reduced. The two ounces will for the future only contain IJ ounces, while the ounce will hold seven-eighth ounce. What is the reason for these heavy and unexpected increases local tobacconists are quite at a loss to understand. They can only put it down to the arbitrary action 'of the big corporations controlling the tobacco industry. One leading v tobacconist, pointed out that the public, "for the brands of tobacco affected which it may be noted are all aromatic tobaccos, will have to pay 9s per lb instead of 8s as before, which, he added, would make tobacco more than ever a luxury.
