The sword he made red-hot m the drawing-room lire, and he 'was fixing it into' tho -shell When the shell exploded. ; : ' : . • • ; The noise was heard .. afar*:-.-!; Mrs, Hodgson, who was decorating the church for Christmas, heard it, but she did not,- associate it with,, her. h orne >- an d was .summoned .later by,,, a. -nessenger,., In the meantime a servant and some neighbors hastened to the assistance of Mr Hodgson, who, m spite of his pain, was able to instruct^ them how to use •a, poker as- a splint for. his shattered He :-\vas taken m &, motor car to Exeter Hospital, yr here.! it; was found that his right leg w-as^ fractured below the kinee (it is feared that amputation i will be^necessary), his right* wrist injured, . and his face* burned. The large Day window of: ..the^>d^win^-room was blown out, a hole was made m the floor, and furniture was damaged.
