Results : Baritone solo, , aria and(recitative from "Alexis, '* Green- ' ing (Wahganui Garrison), 93 points, 1; L. Jensen (Wanganui Garrison), 92, and W. Nelson (St. Kilda Municipal), 92, equal, 2. ' The police have arrested a man named Joseph Williams* on a charge of break- ■ ing and entering the residence of J. T. Tukes, Remuera, and stealing therefrom goods to the value of £60. At noon Dr. Mac Donald, chairman of , the British Medical Association, spoke ' on tho British Insurance Act. He explained that it was compulsory and contributory, and affected all manual workers. There were also voluntary contributions up to £160 a' year m some caseß. Tho fact that the Act was compulsory caused dissatisfaction, more particularly to domestics and farm workers. ; The public opening takes place tonight, when Dr. C. Purchase, of Auckland, delivers tho presidential address. Other speakers will be the Governor, Premier, and Minister of Health. Manley, trainer of .Oxenhope, against the decision of the . Dunedin district committee, endorsing disqualification by. the Dunedin Club for ' pulling Oxenhope. The appeal of E. Aniyes, owner of the horse, was *o% journed for further evidenoe. The criminal sessions of .the Supreme Court opened before Mr Justice Deii'iiston. Mr Hostler I'epresented the Crown m place of Mr Stringer, recently pro- ' moted to tlie bench. Addressing the grand jury, the judge said that the list was the heaviest m his experience. There were forty-four charges against twenty-three persons, but they were not so serious on ' examination. Thirty, charges were connected with the Customs frauds cases. There were .three sexual cases. In each it was a case for the petty jury. Tho following persons were sentenced: Charles Larsen, burg- . lary at Grey mouth, four months' imprisonment ; Norman Findlay, five charges, of forgery at Greymouth, 18 months 5 Alfred Howard, four- charges, of theft at Greymouth, probation ; Frederick Py* son, theft, four months; Matilda Sheeter, theft, sent to Salvation Army Home for 12 months ; Stephen Golding, for a series of thefts, was declared an habitlinl nffnnrlnt'
