CHRISTOHURCH, this day. It was stated by counsel m a land exchange case at the Supreme Court yesterday that the value put by his party on his property waa a fictitious one and only nominal, the other party being fully aware of tlie fact. . "It is a most dispreditable business," interposed Mr . Justice Denniston. Counsel said he had stated what had unfortunately been common knowledge. The practice had been condemned by responsible bodies such as the Canterbury Law Society and tho Chamber of Commerce, and also had been strongly condemned by the Bench. * Later, when witness was being examined, his Honor said it 'seemed to him that ih transactions of this sort each party to the excliange. bluffed. Witness replied that it was very hard to get cash sales of land now. Nearly all the transactions were exchanges.
In reply to his Honor, witness endorsed the statement that the exchange system created fictitious values.
