BIG STAKES ON A LINER.
NEW YORK, August 22.
The smoking-room of the great Cunard liner Mauritania was the scene of continuous gambling during the last voyage from Liverpool. Tne games played were baccarat and ba*nker. Men who played declare that as much as £100,000 changed hands during the trip. Mr. Jay O'Brien, of New York, won more than £5000 on several occasions. Once he pocketed £1000 on the turn up of a single card, and on the last night the ship was at sea he gathered m £2000 m twenty minutes. A disci-edit-able' incident was provided by some of the women on board, many of whom, m violation of the Cunard Company's rules, pushed their way into the smok-ing-room and participated m tho games.
