NEW ZEALAND GIRLS.

VERY POPULAR IN SYDNEY^

A • young Christchurch lady, who has returned to this city after spending six weeks m Sydney, states that many New Zealand girls ate m good billets on the other side; avid' find no' difficulty whatever m keeping their positions and m obtaining .good wages. Lady clerks and lady typists from New 1 Zealand, she says, have a face value amongst Australian employers, as they enter 'the Commonwealth with a reputation associated with the name of their country. They are more diligent, more attentive, more careful, less frivolous and more anxious to give satisfaction than Australian girls, who, as a rule, dp not show any . inclination for office work, or, indeed, fpr any vocation which demands, application /and entails drudgery. Besides that, the Australian gin has developed a twang, which amounts * almost to a misuse of English. This "gets on the nerves" not only of her employer, but also, m many cases, of his customers. The Australian employer may become used to this peculiarity, but there are many Englishmen m business m Sydney, at the heads of houses or on their own account, and the Australian accent' grates upon their ears exasperatingly. ; The Sydney ■ newspapers contain advertisements for lady clerks and typists ih nearly every issue. A capable Ne\v Zealand girl can earn between £2 10s and £3 a week, and is not worked too hard.* She will find that clothing ;is much cheaper m Sydney than it is m New Zealand, but lodgings are dearer. Amusements — -the opera and other places worth going to— also arc expensive. Sydney, of course, offers endless rounds ot attractions. Its harbor and its public gardens are very beautiful, the young Christchurch lady visitor says, and the dresses on the streets and at ?;reat public gatherings are a delight or ever.
