THE ROADSTEAD SERVICE

(To the Editor of the Herald.)

Sir, — Will youi pardon any intrusion on my part for pointing out through the columns of your valuable paper a very necessary matter which should be looked into. by the U.S.S. Co.'s agent to right in . connection with the tendering of their steamers in the open roadstead. This morning (June 4) was an evidence of inconvenience and delay for half an hour, caused through the staging gear not being in proper working order. The sea was choppy, and the tender Tuatea, Avhich had the misfortune to be attended to on the ocean side, Avas just tossed about like a cork. During that time many Avere made to feel uncomfortable. This, sir, we did not mind ; the point is this : the gear for carrying the staging was not ready for oise, and when the patient captain of the Tuatea. remonstrated, he was told to keep his )Avool on. That, sir, Avas. a most uncalled-for answer, especially from one officer to another in the presence and hearing of respectable travellers. -Another matter before I close'; it has been a long- felt want, especially among the gentler sex, that canvass sides. ;should be put on the gangAvays. At., present ropes loosely tied on are the only protection. By having . this convenience attended to it Avould minimise much danger passengers are subjected to. These tA\ r o matters, sir, I Avish you to emphasise, aad perhaps our local agent will look into. We suffer sufficiently by being an isolated town, but the company do not help to make, things easy by adopting these primitive methods of transport. Trusting, sir, these matters will create the sympathy and co-operation of the general travelling,public.-I am^etc.^^^
