SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.

Although the seven-a-side hockey tournament was held .earlier this season, the players showed remarkably good form yesterday, and the large crowd of spectators were treated to some fine exhibitions. The tournament was a decided success, and it will no doubt be an impetus to hockey for this year. Eight men's teams and six ladies' teams competed. No time was lost m getting the matches off, and the manner m which the arrangements were carried out reflected credit on Messrs O. R. Olsen, A. H. Ross, B. Ogilvie.H. Lucas, and R. Sinel. The referees had a busy time, and those who controlled the games were Messrs W. Lewis, H. Garrett, R. Grant, R; Sinel, A. E. Rees, H. Armstrong, and O. R. Olsen. Additional results were as follows:— GIRLS. A grade: Old Girls nil v. Glsbprne nil. . B grade: Old Girls ti l v. -Hjgh School nil., '; ' \ . "'(^ M $».-•• ! (Wltih one win and a draw. (3 I . points), "the' Old Girjls wpn.the A grade, Gisborne Ladles" , being 4, r sacjjrid: , with^twot points (2 <iraws), and. „Hfgh SphooiJL cpming ...next w^thjpnevpoi'n^t Xll (Xva.\f).^:m 'the B „grade X»id Giris won both their games, scoring a \ points, thus winning the ..competition m their grade. Aigjh SchobJ,;Wlth 5 points (1 win) were second, and Gisborne Ladies were defeated each time. Chief interest centred on the ladies' matches, which were exciting. Undoubtedly , the Old Girls' teams were the stronger. In both their matches the A team were m the aggressive. When play!ing against Gisborne Ladies the ball was .rarely out of the latter 's territory, but the splendid defence of the backs prevented any. score being, registered. .The last thatch of the day between ,Old Girls and High School, m the B grade, was very exciting. These teams were evenly matched, and m the. first spell High < School just missed scoring on two • occasions by. the narrowest "margin. Olti Girls were the principal aggressprs during the second spell. Amongst the High School players there are some promising exponents of the game. They are small, but proved very troublesome to the old players. The winning teams are as followsf-» • A grade: R. Fyson, M. Fromin, M. Malcolm, V. Walker, I. Pearce, R. Malcolm, \V- East. .".;'. / B grade: K. Fromni, P. Cox, Church, M. FairliGi M. Thelwall, F. SplVander, and Muriel Church. ! MEN. ' : A section: Civil A3, v, Mercantile 13 0; Mira l v. Kia Ora 1.
