DELICATE SITUATION.
AMERICA'S REPLY TO JAPAN
TOKIO, May 28
The reply of the United States to Japan's representations with respect to the Californian Land Bill has caused great disappointment m official circles. The American despatch declares that the legislation does not involve any violation of the existing treaty. The Foreign Office considers the reply unsatisfactory, as it does not indicate any intention on the part of Washington to take steps to nullify the Act.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs announces that the United States reply will not be published for the present, as the situation is considered a very delicate one.
Viscount Chinda, Japanese Ambassador to the United States, is being urged to press the Japanese interpretation of the treaty.
As a result of the latest development it is considered doubtful whether the committee of the Japanese Parliament will report favorably upon the proposed appropriation of £120,000 for the representation of Japan at the Panama Exposition.
LONDON, May 28
Several British steamships, ranging from 3000 to 5000 tons, have been sold to Japanese buyers within the last few days. Mr Mcßride, Premier of British Columbia, is watching the development of the Californian Anti-Alien Act controversy with the keenest interest. He states that the principle involved is a vital one for the people of the Pacific Coast.
