BETTING IN FOOTBALL.
COUPON SYSTEM LN VICTORIA. • MELBOURNE, April 30. Recently the Football Association of England decided to invoke the aid of the affiliated and sporting organisations to rid football of the betting evil. The coupon scheme of betting on footbaJl matches had become so common, and was proved to be so detrimental to the sport, that the association raised a strong voice m vigorous protest against \the system, and drastic action is contemplated.
It is evident that a somewhat similar form of systematic betting is being introduced m Victoria. Circulars have been issued m which directions arc given to persons who desire to back their fancies : the odds rang© from 3 to 1 to those selecting two winning teams playing off their own ground to 100 to 1 to those selecting the winners of two home and five away matches and a drawn game m, one afternoon. The address of th© promoter is concpaled by those who have received the circulars, but it is understood that the scheme was launched m Sydney, and that certain men m Melbourne have bexm asked to become local agents.
