OPENING OF RUGBY SEASON.

It generally happens that the football match set down for the opening of the season is a failure, inasmuch as the selected players do not turn up and the exhibition of play is painful to witness. This year, however, there is every indication that the opening match, which takes place at the Domain on Saturday, will be an exception to the rule. More than the ordinary enthusiasm is being displayed m the contest, which is to be between Pakeha and Maori teams, and visitors can look forward to a really good game. Mr W. Howard and representatives from each of the teams met last night, and selected the Pakeha flfteens as follows: — Seniors: Full-back, Stubbs; three-quar-ters, Paton, G. Carruthers, L. Murray; flve-eighths, H. Carruthers and G. Pollock; half, H. Skillen; wing, Guthrie; forwards, Nicolas, McGlll, P. McQuarrie, 11. Davis. J. Prickett. C. Moffatt, C. Davis; emergencies, J. Kelliher, R. Somervell, A. Kearney, D. Sexton, Dooley, Tunnicliffe. Juniors: Full-back, H. Stitchbury; threequarters, Kerr, Stevenson, Quinton; fiveeighths, O. Green and G. Cameron; half, J. Walters; wing, J. St. Clair; forwards, L. Winter, J. O'Neill, Kent, J. Lloyd, A: Parkinson, R. Brown; J, Cousins; emergencies. O'Connor/ H. Chrisp, G. Caulton, J. Corbett, R. Wright, O. Thodey. f: Both the Pakeha and Maori teams (published m oui" last Issue) ' are strong combinations'. The" natives are very, keen, and the concensus of ■ opinion is that the pakehas will by no means have things their own way. In all the teams there is some new blood, and it is expected that the opening matches will be the most successful held m Gisborne for many years. The pakeha teams assemble at the Domain at 7 o'clock to-night for the purpose of selecting captains and putting m some training. The . sheds have been thoroughly renovated, and "the electric light has been installed, not only m the shed, but also on the field. Blue and black will be the senior team's colors for Saturday, and the juniors will play m anything but red and black, which are the Maoris' colors.
