FIRE ON THE COURTFIELD.
The steamer Courtfield, which is under charter to the United Tyser Line, arrived at Melbourne last "Monday week from New York, en route to Sydney and New Zealand ports. .During the voyage, on March 30, a fire occurred on board which caused considerable excitement among her officers and crew, as quite close to the seat of the outbreok a quantity of turpentine oil and other inflammable material was stored. Captain Wiseman stated that had the flames not been subdued before they spread to this cargo there would have been no option but for all hands to take to the boats and abandon the ship. Luckily, however, this fate was averted, the fire, after about two hours' strenuous fighting on the part of the crew, being completely extinguished. This incident occurred when the vessel was about three days' steam from St. Vincent (Oajie Verde Islands), m the North Atlantic Ocean . A good deal of cargo was damaged by fare and water, but to what extent could only be ascertained when the hatches were uncoverea anu an examination made.
