The Fire Brigade report shows that! the loss during the year totalled £83,803. Whitoombe and Tomb*' fire accounted for £41,282. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Considerable indignation is expressed here concerning the case of a fireman named Barry, of the steamship Maori. He was sent ashore sick, examined by a medical officer at Lyttelton, and) sent to Christchurch hospital. There it was ascertained that he belonged to Wei- 1 lington, and the authorities told him to return. The medical superintendent of the hospital says that it is the rule of each district to treat its own. cases, end Barry had ample time to catch the ferry steamer. The doctor who examined him, on tho other hand, says that if Barry had travelled he would constitute a danger to other passengers, seeing tiiat he was suffering from advanced consumption. Barry spent Tuesday night on the wharves. Arrangements were made yesterday for his accommodation by Mr Hilton.
