Giving 1 evidence before the Dominions Commission at Sydney, Mr W; H. Millward, manager of • the Pacific Cable Board, said that during the nine years : the, cable, had been working the receipts had gradually and .steadily increased from £79,824 to. £169,500. The rate for ordinary messages had been maintained at 3s a word, but that for press' messages had been . reduced., : : iThere was now, said Mr Millward^ a direct cable between Sydney and Auck- ! land, and the line between Vancouver ! and Montreal v's being worked entirely under the control of the company, and| ,a steady, increase m receipts was looked for. llie system . of, week-end cables was not as generally known, to the public as it mightj. There were fewer transmissions than on the rival line.
