Captain and Mrs Hart leave for Sydney by to-morrow's steamer. The question of the appointment of a Government grader of dairy produce for the Napier and Gisborne districts was again before the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce to-day, when the Napier Chamber inquired whether Gisborne would support such a suggestion if brought forward. Further letters have been received by the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce from Sir Jas. Carroll and Mr W. D. S. MacDonald endorsing replies from the Minister for Mines, stating that the necessary arrangements had now been made for the Director of Geological Surveys to visit the district as soon as the other work which he now had m hand would permit. An intimation that the Public Works Department intended discontinuing for a time the carriage of goods froni Otoko to Rakauroa, owing to the rolling stock on the line- being insufficient to cope 1 with outside goods, came before the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon m a letter from Mr S. S. Dean, m I which he urged the Chamber to endeavor ; to induce the. Department to carry goods until the roads were improved. Men have been at work for several days placing the captain's cabin of the Star of Canada on a sledge, and to-day ; the Borough Council's steam roller was connected with the sledge by means of wire rope. . Unfortunately the engine : pulled too vigorously at the outset, and the wire rope split a runner of the sledge. Rollers were resorted to, and by 3 p.m. to-day the cabin had been moved about a chain, to the front portion of the Tuatea's berth, j The "Stars" have been singularly unfortunate within the last few years. The Star of Japan, a new vessel, Was wrecked off the coast of Africa a few years ago, then the Star of Canada went ashore off Gisborne, and recently came the news of a mishap to the Star of New Zealand. There is rather a curious coincidence m connection with the accidents to these vessels. About seven years ago Captain Ulyatt was captain of the Star of- Australia, his chief officer was Mr W. Brooke, and the second engineer of the same vessel was Mr C. Brooke. These three were parted, Capt. Ulyatt joining the Star of Japan, _Mr W. Brooke being promoted to captain of the Star of New Zealand, and Mr C. Brooke was appointed chief engineer of the Star' of Canada. Within a few years of the parting of these officers, mishaps overtook the vessels to which they were transferred. Determination .accounts for much. Grieve, jeweller, is determined to reduce his stock before moving into M. Craig's premises ; hence huge removal sale prices.*
