The bureau was decorated, and Messrs McGowan and Flowers expressed a cordial desire for the Dominion's prosperity. The Lord Mayor and the leading consuls and other prominent citizens were present. (Received Sept. 27, 9.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 27. At the Dominion? Day reception Mr McGowen, the Premier, intimated that he proposed visiting' New Zealand shortly. The Amateur Swimming Association considered the New Zealand application for readmission. The union decided to adhere to the former agreement ' that New Zealand: be invited to apply when the new agreement is drawn up for the year. In the meantime New Zealand swimmers will be welcomed at championship meetings. The Gas Employees' Union is demanding 12£ per cent, increase m wages, representing an extra burden to the companies of £30,000. A partial lunar eclipse last night was well observed. .-'".-' The employers' conference carried resolutions pledging it to stand by loyal employees at a time of strike and afterwards, and condemning the surrender of State rights to the Commonwealth. Jn the Assembly, Mr Carmichael introduced the University Act Amendment Bill. It provides, for reform of theSenate, bringing it more into touch with outside interests, and increased State subsidies. . The linking up of .primary schools to the university means scholar-, ships, the' winners whereof will, receive university education free. of all charges. MELBOURNE, Sept. 27. The House negatived Mr Groom's amendment to the Maternity Bill, pro-' posing a combined maternity allowance with . provision against sickness and tinemployment. ADELAIDE, Sept. 27. ' Iti the Legislative Assembly, the Treasurer presented his Budget. The year ended with a surplus of £275,150, making the surpluses for the last ten years £2,172,200. which were 'utilised m! reducing the public debt. The population m a year increased by over 13,000. The agricultural and pastoral interests are flourishing. The estimated revenue for the current year is £4,381,812, a surplus of £88,000. Very' large sums will be required m the next few years for public works, and it will no doubt' be necessary to go to the London market.
