CHARGE AGAINST A TOHUNGA.

! PALMERSTON ,N., this day. j There was some-' extraordinary evidience at the hearing of a serious charge against the "tohunga" Hingawata Tuparoa, which was begun yesterday afternoon. He was charged With an offence on Emily H^tft, aged 16, at Motutiti pa. [Sergeant Mills said Hingfiwata went to the pa on April 29 with a large supply of liquor, and gave a considerable quantity of whisky to ; men and women,' making Emily drunk,' and 'it is- alleged that h^ committed the offence at nigtitt without hex 1 knowledge. The girl is irf the hospital too ill to appear, though 'thei'e 1 have been various remands to en-.; ! able her to do so. Dr. Adams deposed) Ito being called on June 6 by some 'natives to see the girl, whom he found 'suffering from ; .ra,pid consumption, peritonitis, and ceiiulitjs. A few days later the police asked him to investigate as to. an offence having been committed on-Api'il 20- <-%*> was so long past' 'that he aid ; ' not 'expect to find traces, and found nothing wrong. . „ Emily Heta's mother, Wiinuv tteta, deposed that on April 27 Hingawata came to her house with a quantity of whisky on Saturday night', and gave liquor to her, the girl being made drunk. He said she was to sleep m the sanie rodm as himself and his wife, and he would, treat her. The girl's fattier and mother were to bite a pen each, and he would then see what was wrong with the girl. They bit the pen, and Hingawata prescribed schnapps with a bit of parsley m it, and gave Emily so much whisky that her mother protested, but Hingawata insisted that it was part of the cure.. He came again on April 29th, and gave them more whisky, and Emily staggered into her mother's room. Mrs Hingawata pulled her out, and took her to bed with them, f ahd next morning Emily told her mother that Hingawata had assaulted her. The hearing was resumed to-day.
