KAITI SEWERAGE.

- SERVICE NOW READY. "I have much pleasure m stating that the TEaiti portion of the sewerage service is now available for use, thus form.ing the initiation of this very necessary and important public service," announced the Mayor, Mr W. Pettie, to a Herald representative to-day. ■'His Wo&hip added that so far only about ten houses had been connected up on the whole of Kaiti, and this, of course? was not nearly sufficient to ensure the proper working of the .service. I Now that the installation was actually at the disposal of house-owners, he hoped j they would readily takte advantage of the same, thus effecting a great advance m sanitation matters, and at the same time relieving the Council of the expense of maintenance of the present system. A number of house installation's, it is understood, are being put m by local plumbing firms, but Kaiti residents generally have apparently not realised that, the use of the service was so near at hand. The sewage from Kaiti is passing through" the septic tank near the breakwater, the effluent being dischargr ed into broken water at the end of the reef. Owing to the few installations connected, it will be necessary m the meantime to flush the mains. The Kaiti sewer mains /were put m on the day -labor systerti under the Borough Engineer's supervision. Under the by : laws hpuse-owners are compulsorily required to connect up, and. the question of issuing the necessary notices may be placed before the Council at its next meeting. \ The first of the installations was brought into use this morning.
