SOME ENGLISH OPINIONS.
(Press Assn.—By Telegraph.—Cojtyright.) LONDON, January 18. The Daily Telegraph states that the unlimited time of the test matches puts a false premium on caution. It* is questionable whether Barnes and Foster would be equally successful if Trumper had adopted Duff's policy oi giving the bowlers instant trouble. ' Tin Australians merit unstinted admiration foi thoir display of splendid cricket pluck. The Westminster Gazette says Carter's pel foriuance was the most remarkable effort < the match. He was the last to bat in f!' first, innings, after a long trying service ii the field, then the first, to bat in the secoi.i inningS. It was a feat of physical endurnw to excite wonder. Sporting Life says that despite Ransford an Trumper's injuries and all the honor of i forlorn hope, they gallantly fought the English and proved themselves the better side. It was evident that the colonials lack'effm-tive bowling when Hordern is mastered. The Daily Telegraph made inquiries in cricket circles regarding Douglas' protest of Kelleway's and Hordern's use of resin, and ; show that the general opinion' is that artifi-j : cial aids to bowlers are unsportsmanlike. The 1 use of sawdust is not analagous, as it is in- | tended to bring the ball back to normal ■ condition. Some recall the wicket-keeper's use jof a mixture of oil and resin on their 'gloves, thus enabling them to transfer a certain; portion Of the resin to the ball so as to assist the bowler. Mr Lacy, secretary of the Marylebone Cricket Club, refused to' /express an opinion. i " SYDNEY, January 18. , Noble, interviewed, said he could not give , a definite decision in regard to playing in "the i next, test. He attributed the defeat in th< last match to a telegram sent by McAlister to , Hill, suggesting the latter should leave himself - out. This, he said, was an insult, and 'doubtless upset Hill and other members oi the team. ADELAIDE, January 18. Hill heartily supports the proposal that Noble should play in the remainder of the tests.
