WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.

Mr J. Mouat, Engineer to the Waikohu County Council, reported as follows at the monthly- meeting of that body to-day:— Maintenance: The grader part}' has been at work in (the Mangatu district, reforming parts of the Mnngamaia road, etc.*.The improvement gang oh tho Kanakanaia road has been withdrawn. The gang on the Motu front road has about completed the improvement works contemplated this year. I propose withdrawing these gangs and concentrating the teams to do necessary metal patching. " ; Contracts: Contract 53, Mangahaumia road: IT. Lord (loan account), completed.— Contract 84, Waiapu-Inland : Government grant, M. Mooney, completed. — Contracts, Mutuera road: Government Grant, S. Bond, completed. — Con tract 59, Oliver road: Government grant, J. Bain; to be completed in 10 days. Government grants: The following Government grants are still' in, hand unlet :— Fraser road (16 chains), Motu Bridge road (8 chains), Armstrong road (80 chains). No word has been received from Wellington re the Puho-Whata-tutu metalling gront; nor the Matawai-Moamii-Tahora grant. Armstrong road has been advertised twice; the- second time one tender was received, but the price was top high. Kanakanaia road; A contract for the construction o( the Ist and 2nd miles has been let to M. Mooney, at » 'satisfactory figure. Four tenders were received; the figures being £480, £484 10s, £563, and £650. The lowest was accepted. Further sections of this road arc ready to let, and the Council's instructions are required. Bridge gang: This gang have completed tho necessary borings for the proposed Mangamaia steel bridge and the , three bridges for the Kanakanaia road. The borings on the' Kanakanaia road reveal the interesting fact that at none of the sites is papa close to the surface of the bed of the river. At the third bridge site, a place where the oldest inhabitants aver there , is a good papa ford, the borings fail ; to find papa at 30 feet. Noxious weeds : The Bathurst burr is appearing on the roads, and instructions "are being issued to the, surfacemen to clear each section of the roads.
