A collision between a. motor-car and a cyclist took place, m Roebuck road abbut 6!30 last evening, a remarkable escape from serious consequences. It appears tliat a motor-car with four occupants was proceeding m the direction of the Roebuck road bridge, when a cyclist with his head down came scorching round the Aberdeen road corner." To try to prevent an accident the motorist steered the car into the ditch, and applied the brakes with such suddenness that the passengers were thrown out, but they escaped with a few bruises, i Tho cyclist had a narrow escape. He apparently did not observe. the car until he collided with it witli such force that he was precipitated beneath the car just bofore it was stopped. Fortunately the motor responded to the brakes promptly. When tho cyclist was extricated from his unpleasant position it was found that his clothing was badly torn, but ho had apparently suffered no in-juty, for he quickly remounted his machine and rode off again. •' *

Tho wind developed into a hurricane] at Napier on Thursday morning, being the worst gale on record. Houses shook like 'reeds, trees were snapped off m all directions, and fences blown down. A large windoM** m Mr J. W. Boyce's workroom m Market street, containing twelve panes of glass, was blown out, but though the fall was fully sixteen feet, not a break nor a crack was sus;tained. A motor cyclist making his way along the Awatoto road, was . twice blown from his machine, but met with no injury. The verandah of the Fire Brigade Station, which, has not been permanently fixed since its removal, was blown down and damaged. The beading round a plate glass window m Mr T. Parker's shop was almost carried away from the frame through the wind tugging at the curtain. On Colenso Hill Mr Crowley had his fence afld gates carried away, and a promisiing crop of potatoes destroyed, the wind cutting the tops off clean and SM-eeping all the earth from the tubers. In May avenue Mr Saunders had the fence at his residence stripped of palings, and Messrs Sam Wood and J. Hannay each lost a chimney. About 30ft. of a shed m the yard of the Vulcan Foundry collapsed and was deposited m a neighboring yard. At Mr R. Todd's residence on Bluff Hill tho chimneys were blown down and a glass bay on the verandah shattered. Several chimneys m Napier South and elsewhere Avere blown down. A window m Mr W. J. Tabuteau's residence on the Bluff Hill was blown m. An elm tree m Mr J. Parker's ground was split m twain. The tree was 60 years of age. The small craft m the inner harbor suffered considerably. Some foundered and others were carried on to the beach, but tho damage sustained is moderate. In Brewster street a chimney top was blown off, and on the Bluff Hill sovei'al ti-ees were uprooted and some fences levelled. Fart of one of McLeod and Co.'s sheds on the Awatoto road, has been blown on to the road. Fruit trees/ have suffered considerably, and m many places the greater part of M-hat were expected to be good crops have been lost. Driving along the Awatoto road was a difficult and dangerous undertaking. Eighteen consecutive telegraph poles were down along the road, and it would take a couple of days before telephone commnnigation with Hastings was restored. Tho poles, snapped clean through half way up. Wires littered the road," and vehicular traffic was foi'ced to go out on the shingle. Three chimneys and a fence wei;e blown down at the Hospital.
