STRIKE OF THE MATES.
(Per Preßs Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The Canterbury Steam Shipping' Company's Breeze arrived at Lyttelton at 8 o'clock this morning from Bluff. All I hands were paid off this afternoon, only j the master aiid one engineer standing by. The vessel will be laid up until such time .as a settlement of the shipping. dispute is reached. WANGANUI, this day. As a consequence of the shipping strike, goods have to be railed to Wanganui. Owing to this extra cost wholesale houses announce an increase m prices of general provisions. As all the steamers usually trading between Greymouth and the West Coast ports of the North Island are laid up on account of the shipping dispute, a beef famine is threatened on the West Coast, the local markets depending entirely on small supplies from South Westland (says the Christchurch Press). The position will reach an acute stage unless the Wanganui service is restored by next week.
