KILLED BY TAXI-CAB.
THE DRIVER ARRESTED

AUCKLAND, this day. ! The inquest concerning the death of Charles Goldsmith, who was killed on the night of Octber 9, was concluded yfeaterday. Deceased was a passenger by an Epsom tramcar, and after • stepping off the car he was knocked down by a taxicab driven by John William Mercer, and received injuries which resulted fatally.
jTh.e jury returned the following verdict: "That Charles Goldsmith died very suddenly near Owen road, Epsom, on October 9, 1911, and that the cause of his death was fracture of the skull and shock, and that one John William' Mercer, the driver of taxicab No. 303, by his negligent driving, did kill the said Charles Goldsmith, and is thereby guilty of manslaughter."
The following' rider was added : "That the jury aye of opinion that motor cars should travel at a moderate speed when approaching tramenrs when they are at stopping placeß."
Mercer was arrested yesterday morning, charged with manslaughter, and was remanded.
