THE MONARCHIST INVASION.
(Press Assn.— By Telegraph.— Copyright.) (Received October 13, 10^30 a.m.) LISBON, October 12. Prisoners, including many priests, are arriving daily from the north. BRISK FIGHTING IN OPORTO. LISBON, October 4. . One of the Lisbon papers reports that the Royalist leader. Captain Couciero; entered Portugal on Sunday at the head of 4000 men. with several quick-firing guns and 150 mules, carrying munitions. Travellers arriving in the capital ( from Oporto describe the terrible scenes they witnessed on Saturday. Just before dawn the Royalists were surprised by troops. Barricading themselves in one of the public buildings, the Monarchists, who were armed with automatic pistols j fired on the troops from the roof of the building and the windows of the upper floors. Other Monarchists, hearing the con-' tinuoiiis discharge of firearms, interpreted it as a signal for uprising, and went rushing through the streets to take up the positions they had previously been instructed to . occupy when the critical moment came. Every man had a revolver, and began firing at the troops from side streets and other positions. Several priests fought most courageously, and thus inspired the others. A detachment of cavalry arrived, and charged up and down the streets, slashing right aiid left with their sabres. Some of the houses were set on fire. No reliable estimate of the killed and wounded has yet come to hand. The Monarchists appear to be loosely organised. Outbreaks are reported from other places, but the Government is seemingly secure. LONDON, October 4, The Portuguese Royalists declared that a general uprising is planned for to-day, which is the anniversary of Manuel's overthrow. '-Y I >' The young ex-King has been 'staying with' Lord Lonsdale, but curtailed his visit in order to attend a special council in London. It is said that Northern Portugal is ready to support the Monarchists' movement.
