CAPTAIN COOK DAY.

The Hon A. C. Carmichael told a deputation from the Australian Natives' Association m Sydney that hq would recommend that August 22, the date on which Captain Cook took possession of Australia for the British, should be observed as a holiday. This suggestion was made by the deputation, which also named the day, urging that April 28, the date of the great navigator s landing, was unsuitable 'by reason of the" fact that it was too near Kaster. Incidentally, the Minister announced . that the Prince of Wales's Birthday Was to be abandoned. Mr Carmichael mentioned that various proposals for holidays were being made, including one on the part of the manufacturers, who wanted Australia Day. He thought that Captain Cook Day, and, the others', should' be amalgamated, and there seemed to be, very good reason why the day nowrecognised by the deputation should be chosen. He had already suggested that the Prince of Wales's Birthday, as it fell very close indeed to the King's Birthday, and, as two holidays coming together m this way would practically dislocate business, might . very well be dropped, and he\would further suggest that m its place August 22 should be obeerxedj
