ALLEGED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

A charge of attempting to commit suicide, on February 4, by strangling himself, was ' preferred against a man named John Wolf, at the Police Court this morning. The Magistrate remarked that accused was in a very bad state, and not fit to plead. He thought ho should be remanded for a week. . Detective Connolly said two constables had been watching the man at the hospital night and day, and they desired to bo relieved of responsibility. At first accused pleaded not guilty, but subsequently said he would plead guilty, as he had no recollection of the ; matter. He stated that he been suffering from insomnia for twelve months. He thought if he had some drink it would make him sleep, but unfortunately it had made him bad. He askted a doctor to send him to the public hospital, but the doctor told him they did not care about taking such cases there, and he would send him to a pri- t vate hospital, which he did. Accused" said he was very bad when he arrived at the hospital, and if he attempted to strangle himself it must have been in a fit of frenzy. He was a young man and had no desire to take, his life. Detective Connolly said accused had been here for about three months, and had been drinking nearly all the time. During the time he had been at the private hospital he had tried to get a knife and to cut his throat, and the. nurse just caught him in the act of strangling himself, Hiß Worship said he did not think good could come of sending accused to prison. He strongly advised accused to leave drink alone, and bound him over in the sum of £10 to come up for sentence when called on. He was given two months' time in which to pay the sum of £5 6s, the expenses incurred by the police in watching him.
