ammimaaemaamiaam^eeaemaammmmmmmmmmmmem TO THE. BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN — In response to the request of a large number of Ratepayers, I beg to offer you my services as Mayor during the coming year. My views generally om Municipal matters are strongly Progressive. Thc most important question at present before the Council is that of Sanitation, in which I take a very keen interest. I am earnestly desirous of initiating, a Drainage system in the more congested parts of the Borough, which inay.be extended to embrace other portions as necessity arises. The Water Supply must be pushed to a successful completion, and those streets not already reticulateel must be provided for as speedily as possible. There is no doubt tliat our streets and roads generally are in a. deplorable condition. Many are without metal, at all,' and in many more tlie metal is worn out. The whole question resolves itself into that of obtaining a cheaper and more regular supply of metal. I shall endeavor to develop the sources of metal we already possess, and also to procure additional supplier. The number of street lamps should be considerably augmented. I am in favor of the Municipal control of the Gasworks, and of bringing the Fire Boards' Act into operation. I consider that the time lias arrived when Gisborne should have a continuous telephone service, in order to bring it in line with centres of equal importance. I am strongly of the opinion that provision requires to be made for cases of chronic disease, such as cannot be . dealt with in our present Hospital, arid also that the present accommodation at the Old Men's Home should be extended, so as to include both sexes. If you elect me, I shall have a seat ori , the Harbor Board. lam in faivor of ' the construction of an. efficient Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance the welfare of the town and district. I endorse the action of the Board in procuring tlie advice of eminent engineers, , and in 'referring the plans to the marine . superintendents of the companies trading [to the port. I shall -use every endeavor to have the matter placed fairly and squarely before the Ratepayers as early as possible. > lam anxious that further reserves . should be secured for the people, and ■ especially desire to obtain a Public Re- . serve up the Wai mata' river for the use of boating parties. I heartily advocate that our Railway ■ should be pushed on without furtlier delay. When the forests aue tapped an export timber trade will be developed, l which ;will result in materially reducing freights on coal and other imports, thus reducing the cost of living in Gisborne. I have the utmost faith iri . the. future > development of Gisbome, a , d should you honor me by election, it will be my constant Endeavor to promote and advance its' interests by eveiy means in my power. i My. watchword will ever be "Progress." Yours faithfully, J. W. WILLIAMS. 419 , Land CL9SE- TO AUCKLAND FAT STOCK j MARKET.
