CANADA'S ARCTIC REGIONS.
LECTURE BY xVR. BELL,
,Canada!s already oxtensive, donlain has ;■ lately had an addition of 500,000 square miles, .mostly of ice , and snow. It is of the Arctic regions of Canada, that Dr. Bell, •;• Director of 'Geological Surveys, is to speak , m his lecture ,ati His Majesty's Theatre ;6n Wednesday, evening, and 'as tlie' fetory of Dr. Bell's exploitations m. northernmost Canada will be /illustrated by some veiy striking photographs, showing thetbeauty of ttie<ice regions, the lectuTe is ; sure' to; be 'doubly interesting 1 and attractive! ; The; new territory to wliich we have' referred : was -recently annexed by Captain Bernier, of the . Canadian Government steamer -Arctic. 'The captain spent 15 months m the Arctic regions, and.sajled m all abqut 11,000 miles. He practically went through the Nofth-W : est Passage twice. Ho contends that tho North Pole belongs to'- Canada j and he ; is so fearful that that "■ point' on the eartn's surface will be reached ! by some of 'the ! Americans how seurchinV tor -it that hb is very, anxious to have liis Government send him to find it. * He has claimed for Canada all bf the islands as far" north aa 81i50,' which' will make a serious difference with whalers m the Arctic region's, , who will now , b^ compelled 'to pay a license, whereas hitherto they have ciceii pursuing their without restriction. Practical and thrifty Canada will /. probably be satisfied with this achievement and let the -North Pole alone.
